People Stare
People stare,
Some crowd around.
I hate it.
An ugly boy comes,
He’s not ugly really.
Does he understand me?
He says something
I don’t get;
I don’t recognize his words.
Wait, that one, those ones.
I feel my face go red,
My hands go to fists.
I shove him and
I move to the track.
Are you deaf? Stupid!
People stare,
The sun retreats,
We are back in class.
The teacher calls me up just to spite me
People silently snicker,
Few ever get in trouble.
One boy looks with sad eyes.
I sit,
Mind blank.
Kids run out;
I grab my lunch and
At my lone corner
No one bothers to join.
I feel stupid,
Like that cute boy with the ugly heart.
People stare; my eyes go hot.
Someone sits next to me
It’s that boy who stared at me,
Stared so sadly.
As I blink away tears,
He signs something
“Who is too?” I reply
His little sisters,
His little sisters are deaf too.
A sad smile creeps onto my face.
“Remind yourself,” he signs,
“People stare.”
