tear it off
piece by piece
that plastic jacket containing me
off with the plastic smile
take off that dyed blond wig
I am not fooling anyone

and
I am done with trying
to have the perfect laugh
to say all of the right things

I am no barbie
my waist isn't the size of dime
I don't wake up with perfect curls
my face isn't flawless
I worry
I fret
I cry
I make bad decisions
I try to be dependable and don't hop from chef one day to teacher the next even if I start to get bored
I'm not afraid to get dirty
pink is not my favorite color

Barbie is plastic and silicon molded into what the world wants us to be
well everyone says " you broke the mold"
they really mean it
because there was never any mold in the first place
nobody can say they are just like barbie or anybody else
sure you can dye your hair platinum blond
go on a starvation diet
but she is an impossible standard

because we are not plastic or silicon
our smiles show joy
not just dyed plastic
we don't need sky high heels to feel beautiful
or a boyfriend to be happy

That birthmark on your cheek
those crooked eyebrows
out of control curls
a tad to loud laugh
are what make us

gorgeous
amazing
kind
real
and
fantastically flawed
humans

i wrote this piece after hearing one of my friends say that she wanted to barbie. I told her that she shouldn't want to be anybody but herself
