The Submarine Diaries
Another day to look for a wonderful whale
I get up from my bed and wipe the fog out of my eyes
I take off my pyjamas and put on my uniform
I should be looking for enemy submarines
But that’s no fun
I walk down the swaying hall
My eyes set straight
I go to my station and put on my headphones
I spend an hour hearing nothing but swishing water
I feel the captain’s hand on my shoulder
as I hear a whale song
I listen to him while I listen to the whales
and I hear we’re going to surface
I run to the deck to see the whales
It’s still wet from the ocean
I slip
I get up
and I see a blue whale
What a day
