What She Didn't See
The second you looked away--
that was when the mask slipped
 when it was really her
and you weren't there to see it
 to see her
 you were too busy
 talking on the phone
 making plans
 laughing with your friends
 your mind was already
 half-way out that front door
shouldn't a mother be there for her daughter?
 shouldn't she listen?
 shouldn't she believe?
 they say
 children should be seen
 and not heard
 maybe that's why there are
 so many dead children
