Cough Syrup Won't Work

When I spoke them,
the words fell
and landed in front of
your feet
and I know you saw them
I know you heard them
because you stepped around them
instead of stepping on them
but when you walked away,
you kicked up dust and tears
and lie after lie
and I breathed them in
I swallowed them
because they're all I had
left of you
but now
I wish it was all gone
but I can't seem
to get it out of my lungs
