Madness, Sweet Madness
Madness, sweet madness!
Yes, take me to the crazy ward,
lock me in solitary confinement...
But first, answer me this, officer,
as you pull your straightjacket
over my unresisting arms:
What IS this mental disease
you have diagnosed me with?
We both know it’s not simple stupidity,
no, it is far from ignorance,
rather, realization.
It is not that my mind has turned corrupt,
I have simply realized just how corrupt it is,
how it always has been.
I ventured into the recesses of my mind,
knowingly and willingly,
only to find how twisted it really was.
I wandered far into the labyrinth
and I have no desire to come out.
You can’t make me, it’s wonderful in here.
Those idiots who say that space is the final frontier
completely ignored the spacious confines
of the brain inside their very own skull.
I live there now, alone with my thoughts,
accepting less and less sensory information,
weaning off my cravings for social interaction.
There is a monster inside my mind, you say,
twisting my judgement,
and I will not argue that this is so.
My thoughts have always been like this, though,
and I am learning to like it.
The mountains and valleys I have found in my mind
are perilous enough that I no longer care for the outside world.
Yes, put me in this small padded room,
as I laugh at the strangeness of life.
Alone with my thoughts, I find the patiently waiting beast
who shuts the door behind me.
Happily, I help it turn the key.
I have begun the descent into madness
and oh, how sweet it is.
