Not Phoenixes
Cause it’s around this time
I’m feeling six feet down
My heart is wrapped in chains
And the key can’t be found
It’s these simple things
Gravity won’t let me be
I want to spread my wings
Be free and fly
But in a cage it’s not that easy
I’ve been told to take my time but
Time is only temporary
We’re not like a phoenix
Won’t get a second chance
Because life is a game
Gotta fight to reach the end
Gotta reach the end
Covered in scars
The ones around you say you’re doing fine
That you’ve turned out great
That you’re good and you’re wise
Can’t they see me?
Don’t they know
That this girl is not just their shadow?
Though I’ve been told to take my time
It’s not like the world will wait for me
It’s moving on and so must I
I’ll break the chains and God will set me free
And I’ll laugh in the trees
And dance through the hills
You’ll see what you missed out of life
See what you did when you held me so tight
And whispered to me, “You will always be mine.”
Gave me three wheels instead of a bike
Gave me a window instead of a life
Darling, when I grow old
Get lines on my skin
My scars will not fade away
They’ll burn like a brand pressed into my hands
Like a wound from that very first day
You’ll see what you’ve done
See what you did when you prided yourself on my smarts
But you’ll never know, be blind to the truth
That you’ve always been breaking my heart
