Dear XXX
Do you ever wonder
How the stars keep their shine
Night after night?
Burning like streaks of fire
That never fades
No matter rain or shine
Last night I held some candles
Sixteen to be exact
Watched their wavering flames
Pondered their transience
They were warm
And thawed my fingers
But the ice whipped my sides
I still remember
Seven years back
When a little girl cowered
Under the same cold wind
Although you were there
To push the frost away
That little girl, you wonder,
Whatever happened to her?
I think her bones are steel now
Her heart is granite
But the wind still found its way
And wrecked a little havoc
I watched the candles die
One by one
Saw the smoke swirl in the air
Wisps of broken promises
Felt the disappointment once again
That flames are not stars
Another year gone by
My hands are still cold
Happy birthday to me
