Ashen Smile
I put an ear to your chest the other day
but heard only silence from your pores
I took a fist and knocked
but only echoes came to greet me
My fist bruised and I knocked down your ribcage
to check for a pulse
But all that was in there was empty black and the subtle beat
of crimson
My hand clasped your heart but my fingers went numb
My needle and thread intertwined with your veins but your arteries splintered in my grip
But I don't think you noticed.
Your ashen smile shone bright as always.
