Story of My Brother
Peter, dear Peter
A brother, a friend, a mentor, a hero
At least before the wall
Was built up, brick by brick
Seeming unbreakable between us
With watchful eyes I stood by
Seeing careful hands fashion each one
Precisely and unfalteringly
Not thinking to knock it down
While I still could
Spending his days in a small dwelling
Hidden in rosebushes and oak trees
Making wonderful things
With wonderful hands
Unapproved by our father
Threatened and reprimanded
To make something of himself
Or determined silence
Peter stood his ground
My father kept his promise
And I remember that fight
A terrible fight
He remains behind the brick wall
So tall and sturdy
That I will never break through
But still I bang on it every day, calling out
Calling out
