No, You Cannot | Teen Ink

No, You Cannot MAG

November 6, 2008
By Anonymous

It is a new nation,
a nation that proudly proclaims:
“Yes we can.”
But what power holds “yes we can,”
when America has told many of our
brothers and sisters
“no, you cannot”?
You cannot follow your heart.
You cannot move forward.
You cannot take a hand.
You cannot break the mold.
“Marriage is a holy bond
for a man and a woman
it is not yours to taint,” they say.
Where is the future?
Relentlessly we must
keep striving for a better day.
We must stop this hatred
and bring about change in the
wake of defeat.

This was beautiful. You captured America's struggle for equality perfectly. Keep writing, I'll keep reading!

Brad, who made you the marriage police either? Who are you to say whether or not her point is wrong, when you're mad at her for the same reason?

And Detective C, do you watch a movie that goes entirely against your belief system and walk away saying nothing more than, "The camera work was amazing"? A movie, book, poem, song, etc. is created to prove a point or written for people who believe a certain way or thing. The reason something is popular is because tons of people agree with it, not (only) because it's camera-work/effects/writing style was superb.

The reason this poem is so popular is because tons of people agree with the message (I'm not one of them), NOT because of the way it was written.

But that's what I'm saying. You're born with your brain programmed to like certain colors, just the way you're born to like certain types of people. It's not really something you can change. You can't force yourself to like purple if it really doesn't appeal to you, or force yourself to not like green when it's your favorite color.

Whether you agree of disagree is not important. Just respect your differences and don't fight. Treat the poem as a poem, focus on the way it is written if you don't like the message, or focus on how the message is presented. You have not to take it to heart.

"Imperfection is beauty. Madness is genius. And it's better to be ridiculous than to be absolutely boring." - Marilyn Monroe

I did not know that deer could be homosexual! I know that albatrosses can, and there are many species that change gender naturally as they mature (goldfish are one of them) and then mate.

God created Adam and Eve and gave them free will. They were pure until they ate the fruit. People who are heterosexual are equally guilty of sin as people who are homosexual. We are equally wrong, no one is more 'right' or 'holy' than another. It's just so sad when someone pushes another away in disgust because of who they are.

Yes, I sound preachy, but I hope I don't sound negative. Trying to impart a positive message like our friend, the wonderful poet here who wrote this great poem and decided to share it with the world.

love in it'a essence is just spiritual fire

i have to agree with skoppy355, marriage should not be judge by the sexs of the people involved but, by their love for each other and how happy they are, and if you don't know the people, or you dissapprove, remember you have little right to judge, because if god create us all, then he create some of us to be homosexual, and if that's the way he wants it, who are we to disagree? yes in the beginging was adam and eve, but now some times there is adam and adam, eve and eve. people should learn acceptance of those who are different from themselves.

p.s. we are not the only species that is part homosexual, deer are too.

marriage should be thought of as a bond of love between two people, regardless of gender. most people will tell you that in a marriage love is the most important thing.
