His Test
"Do you want to talk about it?" I ask
The words, so personal, strangely impersonal
Typed on a touch screen
It sounds like a question
But it's more of a demand
A demand of trust
Of loyalty
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Seemingly simple
Just a measly question
Asked out of concern
But it's a test
He doesn't know that
"Do you want to talk about it?"
Do you want to
Let me in
Trust me
Talk to me?
"No thanks"
"No thanks"?!
No thanks.
Two words
Eight letters
Two syllables
No thanks
No, I don't trust you
No, I don't want to talk to you.
Nor do I want to let you in
"JUST TALK TO ME"
I want to scream
"FOR ONCE, LET ME IN
"LET ME SEE
"I WON'T RUN AWAY."
Please.
I want to beg.
Let me listen
Let me be your shoulder
I'll be your ear
"No thanks."
"Okay."
