Bruised Apple
nobody wants the bruised apple
at the bottom of the grocery shelf
 “It’s bitter and brown,”
a little girl grunts as she eyes it contemptuously

but the bruised apple never begged to be hated
and thrown back into the pyramid
of dented oranges, squishy bananas, and holey plums

i wonder if i am the bruised apple
at the bottom of the kitchen bowl
 that everyone forgets about
until the yellow and pink and shiny skin rots
and becomes white and green and fuzzy
