River
you cry because you are strong
they tell me I am strong
 can overcome anything
can fight the world with my pinky toe
 they are wrong

I cry because I am weak
 a river breaks the dam
 and floods the earth,
the Milky Way, the whole universe
 I cannot see the stars

 she cries because she knows
 what happened to me when
I was five; I could not speak
 for weeks
 mute? deaf? dumb?
 none of the above

 he cries because he sees
her cry; I watch and wait
 does he know, too, does
 he love me?
 eyes on the mauve carpet
 nothing to look at but
 the river
