We Are Gone
When I see you, you’re happier than I’ve seen you lately
Smiling and laughing more than you used to
And I’m happy for you that you made it out okay
But that’s not so easy for me to say
At first I was okay after the initial cry
Except silly me started missing you again
Missing all the things we did and had together
Especially the comfort you gave me with just a few words
“You’re beautiful”
“I care about you”
“I need you”
“Bottom line, are you okay?”
And most painfully, “I love you”
Each of these tied to memories that can’t be erased
No matter how much I wish they would, I’m stuck
Stuck at facing the fact that it’s over
And that living in the past isn’t going to go anywhere
But deep inside my heart to the painful places
The places I can’t forget because of what they did to me
Or us
