Human
The Human Being Never Existed
What an absurd idea
Here I am today, speaking
to you. And yet you say
my species, me people don’t
exist? But I see your reluctance
still, fine. I will prove
to you my argument. Look at
the Eiffel Tower, the Washington Monument, the Grand Pyramid. All
made by humans.
Look at the Great Gatsby, Don Quixote, A Tale of Two Cities. All
written by humans.
Look at planes, trains, and cars. All
thought by humans.
Look at ambition, compassion, and greed. All
felt by humans.
Look at electrical impulses, magnetic repulsions, and concentration gradients. All
in humans.
Look at empty souls, hard bone, and flowing veins. All
composed in humans.
Maybe we are just a machine, governed by simple rules of diffusion and arithmetic. Maybe we are
the collaboration of trillions of microscopic organisms.
Maybe we don’t truly exist. But for the sake of living and dying, for hoping and doing, I’d like to believe
I do exist. I’d like to believe I can live on,
even after the power is turned off.
