On Free-Writing with Caution
Did it go over the net, or under?
Cursive is a lost art, according to some.
Expensive pens and pencils and erasers
deemed unnecessary.
Loop-dee-loop-dee-loop,
words passing by,
flying, soaring straight over our heads.
It takes a special kind of lead to carve
charcoal rivers into present-day
mountains of loose-leaf,
acquired with minimum
effort and expertise.
In between staples and its metallic origin,
we’ve lost our roots,
and have somehow convinced ourselves
that they don’t matter as much.
