A Dreamlike Haze
I see a girl, from far away
She’s standing alone
Under the underpass.
Flipping her hair,
Pulling down her skirt,
Which seems to ride higher and higher.
Cars pull up
They wave and whistle
She smiles, blowing a kiss.
Her insides swirl,
Stomach pulled in knots,
Yet she smiles flirtatiously all around.
Too late to stall
She accepts her fate,
Ducking into the next car she sees.
All the strangers look the same
Overeager to start,
Never asking her name.
The car wizzes by
Motel after motel, and they
Deteriorate with each passing mile.
The car comes to a stop
She tumbles our dizzy
That drink probably wasn’t just water
Diving into the bathroom
She starts to prepare
Avoiding the mirror like the plague
Finally she looks
And I uncover the truth
Because in the mirror is me.
