California's Love Song
Whitney and Shasta were such fine girls
With glistening white hair in the winter,
And stout legs longer than rivers.
I loved with them to find my heart
And the gold that you promised
Before we fell apart.
Darwin and Keith were the strongest of boys,
Through the rough and the wild
Nothing was mild.
I lived with them to find the mine
That coveted the gold you promised
When you held me blind.
I started to feel the wind
Between my fingertips
And as it dried my lips.
The freedom of nature was too liberating for me.
I needed control
Structure
Patterns.
But I let you fall in love with Trinity
And this sick idea of divinity.
Now I’m getting old
And the mountains no longer sing.
The river runs a little faster
And you’ve gone to live with the kings.
