Thank You, Alex
Thank you for being arms around me,
Kind words when I can’t sleep,
And love when I don’t feel I deserve it.
Thank you for comfort at a moment’s notice,
For smiles and hugs
And that indescribable feeling I get when we stand so, so close.
Thank you for soft lips as I stand on my tip-toes,
Making it so hard for me to breathe.
Thank you for being my oxygen, my air, my sanity.
Thank you for golden hair and sparkling crystal eyes,
5 foot 9 and all mine.
Thank you for you, and taking the time to help me shine.
Thank you for having the tact to break up with me
Not 20 minutes after I read you this poem.
Thank you for finding me “quirky” and “weird” and “it’s your personality.”
Thanks for “it’s not you, it’s me.”
Because it is you.
Thanks for breaking my heart.
Thank you.

I love this poem because it is a display of true, unfiltered, perfect irony. I wrote the first half in class about Alex, the T.A. in my creative writing class and also my boyfriend… at the time. I had written about how I loved him and how sweet he was and how I felt about him. I was in love. I read this poem out loud to the class one afternoon, and I felt amazing knowing he could understand my love for him. But lo and behold, when the bell rang for us to have our lunch period together, we got in his car and he drove to the park… where he promptly broke up with me. There are certain words, gentlemen, that you should not EVER say to a lady. Topping that list is IT’S YOUR PERSONALITY. Boys, guys, dudes, listen carefully. NEVER SAY THIS TO A GIRL! EVER! So you see, I’m totally over it (NOT!) and now you know why I avoid eye contact with our beloved Alex.
