Accidents
I look at you
As if a heart somewhere
Has just stopped beating
I have witnessed a murder
But haven’t committed a crime
This water your eyes have shed
Cannot be reversed
It has spilled over
Dribbled down the walkways
Of your human skin
If I could guide it to safety
Nurse it back
Bring it home
I wouldn’t hesitate to
But I know this beauty
I have seen it before
It is the evil silence
Before the collapse
Of a seemingly solid bridge
The downfall of a historic statue
It is the crumbling of a monument
I know this beauty
It is a light dying out suddenly
Leaving a trail of guilty smoke
My conscience cannot erase
I close my eyes
Imagine a different image
Wishing this ill-intentioned view away
