Claritin and Zyrtec
I imagine it was late spring
and pollen was in the air.
  The old prom queen
  is digging up weeds.

  Claritin in one pocket
  Zyrtec in the other.
After awhile of sneezing her brains out
she sits back into the grass.
  She reaches for her claritin
she takes it and after awhile
  it doesn’t relieve her misery
and her pain is still there.
  she shoves her shovel into
the dirt, and rips away the roots
she flings the dirt right into her face.
  She throws off her gloves
brings her hands to her face
and starts to sob and sneezes some more.
She looks at the claritin from
earlier, and pulls the zyrtec from her pocket.
This time she puts both in her mouth
and swallows. She closes her eyes and waits for relief.
  She packs up her tools
and feels her heart start to race.
She knew she shouldn’t have taken
both but she didn’ t care.
  She gets in the house
  walks past old photographs,
  sees her husband, kisses him
  hello, same to her children.
Then she sprints up the stairs
  opens her laptop,
  and writes down
  everything she did that day.
She ends it with an XOXO
and sends it to my father.
  Instead of the man that
  she married 35 years ago.
