Early March in Michigan
the air nipped my ankles when I stepped outside
my hopeful lack of a coat was a regretful choice
early March is a funny time
especially in Michigan
where it becomes a lion/lamb hybrid
A few impossibly warm days, usually the 14th and 15th
before Miss Michigan plunges the state
Back into the depths of February
But I thought it was spring
He smiled and it warmed my heart
Like hot cocoa
but when I turned around
I realized hope was a foolish thing
Because the girl behind me
Smiled back rows of perfect teeth
and trotted up to him,
I know it’s childish
but I wish he had saved part of that smile for me
I sighed
my hand impossibly empty
my heart incredibly full
But I thought it was spring
