burning cities melt hearts
the chains are tight around us
binding me to you
and you to me
and we can see the smoke,
and we can hear the roar.
ill go out hand in hand with you,
a raging inferno,
a monstrous blaze,
that eats the soot and ash and metal whole
and spits out nothing but charred bones.
maybe in time we'll be alive again
and bloom with the new flowers
and i'll see amaryllis in your smile
and poppies in your teeth
and daisies pushing out of your ribs
and eyes flashing with chrysanthemum
a carnation for every heartbeat when i thought of you
millions and millions overtaking the metal skeletons
your voice is soft against my skin
a quiet lullabye,
a ballad meant for me,
a sonnet sung in smoke and ash.
i can feel it in my lungs, devouring me whole.
and i know there is no glory in this bonfire.
we'll go out like atomic bombs.
i can see the mushroom cloud approaching.
it's better like this.
every failure scorches in my bones,
every one i ever loved sets my blood aflame.
the world changes.
we will not.
i'm afraid of what will happen
when we meet those gods in kingdom come.
hold my hand at the end.
