“I love you” reeks with oppression,
“You are mine” supposedly romantic, binds us together,
In order to give love you have to do what I say,
A command so cruel,
Yet it was laced with such love,
A misguided love that turns the heart into stone.
You are supposed to think not through your mind but through your soul,
But how can you think when the other half is so much stronger?
Or is he really stronger?
Or is it just because you took away the “s” in she that he becomes more powerful?
With tension screaming in your back,
You clench your fists tightly,
You need the power,
But did you know you are the power?
Power is not in the pronouns,
Power is not in the gender or the sex,
Power is in the love you provide not for yourself,
Not for one another,
But for the love you have for the respect in the air you breathe,
And the love for the justice in the world that you live for.
So, freely say “I love you,”
But only if you know the power is yours.
