As poverty tips over the ladder to success,
As prospects darken with skin color,
As gender defines pay.
You can be anything, they laugh,
Ignoring the broken dreams, the lost hopes,
Building barriers as they claim to break them down.
But still.
You can be anything, they say—
But not to everyone.
