Where I’m From
Where am I from?
I am from nowhere and everywhere all at once
I’m from the snowed in weeks with no power playing board games
The far as can see skies that lead to nowhere
I am from the hilly roads playing with the neighborhood kids causing mischief
And the scars of the dog bite
I am from the hot weather and Southern accents
I’m from the sounds of the flowing waters of the lake
To the bright skies of the scorching summer days
I’m from the forgotten memories of before
And from the future memories that will be lost in the wind
I’m from the 3 AM sneak outs to the coffee shops in the cites
And the dark walks home alone loving the feeling of the thrill
But knowing the thrill is only in my head because there’s nothing to be afraid of
I’m from the African lady doing my hair saying I’m so pretty
I’m from the steam rolling of my hair as a young girl in the beauty store
And the looks of curiosity of how the hot comb works
And why a little white girl like me would do that
I’m from the strange looks at my black family and me
And the whispers asking why she’s with them
I’m from the fake smiles only as a pretense for their berating questions
I’m from the friends I’ve made everywhere and left there
And for the ones who slowly drifted from me
And the ones who to this day are still with me
I’m from 7,500 miles away
And I’m from here and there and over there and there too
I’m from the ignorance of those here
And from the welcoming open arms of my fellow brats
I’m from the change every two years that has made me adapt
And the year it takes me to assimilate
And the next year it takes me to make friends
And the summer I have to leave to do it all over again
I’m from the lights of the never ending buildings to the open fields that go on forever
Where am I from?
I am from nowhere and everywhere
