A god Among Men: The Colossus

From the earth they draw copper and zinc,
forged to make the skin of a god in the sky.
Blocks of marble are dragged arduously through the soft sand,
and stones piled to ensure that their god will not fall.
This, a testament to their faith.

Mounds of sand accumulate, growing taller each day,
surrounding their golden creation.
As the weary workers’ footprints decorate the earth,
their towering masterpiece reaches an outstretched hand to the sky.
This, a testament to their faith.

The earth is moved, the sand swept away
from feet much larger than the men who built them.
Following 12 years of toil and labor,
the magnificent tribute shines brightly under the sun.
This, a testament to their faith.

The earth moves once more, now shifting the ground
on which their god stands, prominent and proud.
The golden creation cracks and crumbles,
crashing to the ground as the people cry out in despair.
This, a testament to their faith.

Time erases the physical marks of history,
wind and dust erode the face of a god.
The once great statue is carted away to be melted down.
Lost to the modern world, leaving behind an immortal story.
This, a testament to their faith.
