A Darkening Sky
  It’s a sky
  A lovely blue
  Dotted with clouds
  But they loom
  Some days they grow darker
  Heavy with rain
  Droplets fall down
Washing me to the bottom of the earth
  Where I lay, quiet
It hits me like a bus
  Speeding through traffic
  Like a junkie with withdrawal
  A spike in my back
  All of a sudden
  All at once
  A flash storm
  A streak of lightning
Shocking me out of my senses
  Until I’m paralyzed with doubt
  With fear, with sadness
A weight pressing on my chest
  Where my heart should be
  I never see it coming
Yet I know it’s always there
  Waiting, high above
  Growing ever closer
  Its finger reaching, probing
  Turning my soul black
  With every little touch
  My veins fill my lead
  My skin turns pale
  My eyes bloodshot
  Since I can’t sleep
  Since I can feel nothing
  But the storm brewing
Ready to spill over and consume me
I try to hold it at bay
  Ringing alarms, sounding the bell
  But the efforts are weak
  My resolve is gone
The wind always wins, whipping it away
  Until I’m empty, hollow, nothing
  Paper tossed about
  Grains of scattered sand
  Shards of broken glass
Sparkling in the pale light of the next calm morning
Pieces of me left to be put back together
By the little will I have left
That grows smaller every time I’m smashed to bits
  How many dawns are left?
  How many storms?
