Alcohol
The liquor burns down her throat,
Trying to mask her problems as usual
Her drunken slurs grow,
Louder and louder.
Hateful words slipping
Right off her tongue,
As if she has no filter.
She is an alcoholic.
She is dependent
On the substance to forget.
Forget all the pain, anger,
And destruction.
Her family is filled with worry.
Worried for the next call,
Could be her very last.
Worried about how much she drank.
Worried for her escalated emotions
Could get her into trouble.
Worried if she is in jail,
Again.
Worried she may have drove,
Under the influence and crashed.
But it's only one drink.
Only one drink to ruin your life.
Only one drink to lose your life.
Only one drink to sit six feet under.
Only one drink to never see your loved ones again.
But it was the “cool” thing to do.
She never thought it could happen to her.
She never thought she’d become an addict.
She never thought she’d lose her life to a substance.
But it’s only one drink.
