This Night
My eyes study
the explosions at midnight
blasting themselves to rubble
to celebrate the new year.
Leaving shy marks
on the fresh new year’s sky.
Skeletons of smoke fading into gray clouds
only to be blown away
by the harsh winds
of this day.
Blown away
to greet other
New Year’s Eve pollution.
Polluted air
and polluted people.
High in the sky.
The leftover residue
of a night
most people won’t remember
the next day.
