But I Don't Think You Did
if you really listened,
if you really listened closely,
you would have noticed
that when hitting piano keys,
the sound of wood pieces colliding is buried beneath the music notes that ring out with pride
you would have noticed
that as a ripened fruit falls,
there’s something delicate about
the almost inaudible tearing sound as it is released from the clutch of stem structures
followed by the disheartening thud of the drop
(speaking of “thud,” the falling of a tree caused a bunch of fuss over unperceived existence,
which is pretty silly if you think about it
what does it matter whether or not you can hear the thud? just let the darn tree rest in peace!)
you would have noticed
that when the garbage truck swings by,
the machinery, when operating, produces a creaking noise
curiously resembling a chirp and,
perhaps, integrates into the conversations of birds
also, it isn’t quite the same creak as the swings on the playground
(which is grating, even terrifying actually)
you would have noticed
that you are capable of noticing too much at times
your senses heighten when you're angry at someone
every sound that they produce bothers you
their words, the distinct footsteps, how they close the door
you could have noticed
that when someone really cares for you,
you can hear in her sighing the words "I want you to be okay."
that at dinner, when she nags you to eat more vegetables,
she means "you are so very, very precious to me,”
and even when sitting silently, staring at you from the driver's seat,
she stares at you with the words "take care" in her eyes
but I don't think you did
you ain't got a clue

When I thought about the ignored sounds of the world, I thought of her.
