Where I'm From
I am from emerald shores
Birthed from sea foam
Dressed in light
From the reflection of the moon,
The invisible control
Of time and distance
I am from backyards
With half-filled sand boxes
From these soil seeping
Earth filled lungs
From picking weeds
And gifting them as flowers
Because from an early age
I found ugly things to be
Treasures
I am from the backseat
Purity and innocence
Clouded by the foggy night
From broken headlights
Of that navy Chevrolet
From no choice
From the invisible control
Of the drunk behind the wheel
I am from
Norepinephrine,
Serotonin
And artificial
Dopamine
From the humming of machines
And the ticking of monitors
From
L’appel du vide
And all the thoughts in between
From tear stained cheeks
And disappointment
From the risks and regrets
I took in order
To be pretty
To be a flower
In a garden of weeds
From restored faith
And life’s prayers
The distance
Between the lands
And the heavens
I am from
The grasp of God
And His invisible control
Which finally felt
Inviting.
