Living in America
Americas tragedies are always in the back of my mind.
I’m afraid of riding on planes,
Of seeing an unwelcome guest,
Carrying a gun pointed at my chest.
I know I shouldn’t be,
But I am.
I’m afraid of going to school and hearing a loud alarm.
Of the inter com saying code red.
I know I shouldn’t be,
but I am.
I’m afraid of going to the opening premiere of a movie,
Of having a packed theater,
And it being an easy target.
I know I shouldn’t be,
But I am.
I’m afraid of going to my favorite artist’s concert,
And later finding them dead.
I know I shouldn’t be,
But I am.
I’m afraid of walking down the street,
And a police officer seeing me the wrong way,
Leaving me lifeless on the ground.
I know I shouldn’t be,
But I am.
I’m afraid of attending a peaceful protest,
And it suddenly turning violent,
I know I shouldn’t be,
But I am.
I’m afraid of going to church,
And having someone disagree with my beliefs.
I know I shouldn’t be,
But I am.
Listen to what they tell you,
Duck
Play dead
Never run
Remain clam
I am a scared American that is constantly scanning for danger.
Not wanting to be the nest big tragedy on the news.
I should not be afraid in this free and wonderful country,
But I am.
