Whenever
When the clouds cry
tears on unforgiving ground,
I’ll open up an umbrella over you
to keep you dry.
When the sky is frozen
tears falling lighter, falling slower,
I’ll wrap a scarf around you
to keep you warm.
When your legs cannot walk any longer,
I will be your legs.
When your arms cannot stretch any further,
I will be your arms.
When your lungs cannot breathe another breath,
I will be your lungs, your breath, anything you want me to be.
But when the world vanishes before us white,
there isn’t anything I can do,
And when the heavens fall from their places up on high,
there isn’t anything I can be, so
I will ask of you one thing, just one single thing,
to keep your smile.
