we were a winter

everything about us was cold
as i look at the photo from over a year ago
i can feel the january air in my bones
i feel the sting as i breathe it into my lungs
the smell of snow
my nose grows red and freezes at the tip
the steam from my hot breath billows from my mouth and dissipates into the sky
your green eyes stare into the camera
they pierce through the screen into mine like icicles
they hold me captive for a while
i hold my breath
then sigh
i'm glad that summer has arrived
