The Hymn of a Barrel Racer
He calls her name over the loudspeaker,
And she walks towards the entry way.
She believes she will win upon the back of this little mare.
She trusts her.
She trots down the alley,
And flies through the gate .
She gallops to the first barrel,
Trying to run straight.
She passes the timer,
And the clock starts ticking.
She slides around the first barrel,
But this is only the beginning.
She flies toward the second barrel,
Going at least thirty-five.
Then they are off to the third
The mare kicks it into overdrive
The girl’s sight is blurred from the speed.
The mare drops her butt at the last barrel,
She digs in the dirt and races for home.
The barrel horse is a special breed.
They are almost home.
The mare wants to win.
She lowers her head,
And her ears are pinned.
As the team crosses the timer,
The girl pulls back on the reins,
And tells her horse, “woah”.
That run was on fire.
