They looked like you
All of us
Given the same speech we’ve been fed before
“Don’t go there”
“Don’t do this”
The same drivel that dribbled from teachers
That were scared
Or payed to feel so
We weren’t surprised
The news couldn’t get enough
Reports of somebody somewhere getting shot
He looked like you
Like your brother
Like your father
Like your uncle
You could be next
So you must be taught
Taught to be safe
To stay away
To not be loud
To not be you
