Small Steps
Small Steps
Breathe in,
out
The chair
pressing cold and hard
against my back.
I look down
the fretboard,
daunting
daring me to play
Metallic strings,
indented ridges
nipping at my fingertips.
I begin
twelfth fret, fourth string
fifteenth fret second string
the riff
forming
"Sweet Child O' Mine"
I tense,
pluck a flat note,
and stop,
defeated,
hands trembling.
I look to the future,
understand the path,
get into position,
and begin again
