As the last burst of summer heat hits,
it’s turning the leaves of the corn and soybeans
brown the leaves and cobs drop down
pointing towards the ground

On the farm we always move forwards
because we can't lose our ground
We can never be at a stand still
because that means our productivity is zero

The beans are usually the first crop to come off,
But we can't spill or drop them on the ground
because then we're spilling our profits

The biggest battle on the farm is the clock,
a race against it,
We almost never get everything harvested,
Rain or shine there's never enough time

Our biggest worry is usually getting all the crops off
Then comes the concern if our fields,
are getting good yields

Most people think farming is
all driving and it's not a lie,
although most of the time were driving
it's to keep our drive going,
That way we can thrive,
when the crops are coming off

What most people don't realize is that with our “seat time” in the fall,
Also come with a hefty price
Because the last burst of heat makes us get beat,
Greasing everything
and taking on the mighty task of maintenance,
on our monster machines

Often times during harvest our combine driver
is so in the zone he doesn't answer his phone
You can call and call
and still he will watch all the plants

fall into the head of the combine
However if he calls you,
come hell or high water
you better answer his call
or the whole crew will fall in a mood of b*tchiness

Then there's my father,
who some years says why even bother
Crop prices so low
he wants to drop everything
and auction off everything we own
But when prices are good,
then were in overdrive so that we can thrive

And the most important person in our crew is mom
She works third shift year round,
but this time of year she has a job
that runs her into the ground
She sacrifices going to bed,
to make sure we're well fed

She's the backbone of our operation
and without her
we wouldn't be able to stay on track
Without her we would be starving
while in the fields maximizing our yields

While I run grain cart
my dad is the field working right alongside used
My dad is tasked with running wagon trains
which tends to drain him so he has to nap between loads
He's able to get rested while we are being tested
by high stress levels in the field

We are a special breed of people
All our hard work,
blood,
sweat,
and tears is what makes us strong
and make us feel like we belong,
and the long 12-16 hour days is what makes who we are this time of year
