Grasping his little girl’s small ones
on her first day of pre-school
(tears falling silently onto his palm
as she begs him to stay)
Twisting a magenta balloon
into the shape of an elephant
(her mouth curving into a smile
as she blows out her birthday candles)
Combing through her hair
while she complains about her prom dress
(thumb pressing click on the shutter
as her arm laces around a boy’s)
Holding the faded memories
in his heart
(as she drifted away like a
magenta balloon, released)
