This is Me
I’m from Donald Clarence, from whom I got my name.
I am from my distinct deformities; my dimples.
I’m from Pete, the brother my brothers never had.
I am from love and laughter which makes me whole.
I’m from being reminded “if you aren’t first, you're last.”
I am from learning a C won't kill me, only help me grow.
I’m from chasing dreams, controlling my destiny.
I am from the nasty bruises and floor burns, from the field or gym.
I’m from playing baseball, like my brothers.
I am from traveling the 50 states with my teammates.
I’m from pre-game rituals, wearing my lucky sports bra, and singing Chicken Fried.
I am from the dirt with which my dad planted the trees, questioning “What kind of tree is this?”
I’m from fresh cut grass, Sunday after Church.
I am from the hours behind the scenes, that no one sees.
I’m from memorizing the verses of hymns and passages, embedded in my brain.
I am from 8:15 church, yawning in the pews.
I’m from Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you, Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do
not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
I am from Him (Donald too) and always will be.
