The Extra Plate
The worst part
about divorce,
about going from a family of six
to a family of five
is the extra plate.
Our plates all come in matching sets.
Six green ceramic plates
with six matching cups.
Six floral plastic plates
and six pink bowls to match.
But every supper
when I set the table
I leave one of each,
one extra plate,
all alone
in the cupboard.
And one seat
at our table of six
is alway empty.
