My situation’s dire
As I hide behind the sink,
For now I can smell fire
And can no longer think.

Mama said she’d come get me,
And all would be all right.
But I fear that she’s left me
And I’ll burn here tonight.

I heard the soldiers come in
And now they have all gone
Did Mama leave with those men?
Are she and I now done?

I told Mama I’d stay here,
And none could call me out.
And though I’m sick with fear
She’ll come back for me, no doubt.

By now the smoke is heavy,
And I am short on air.
But I have grown weary
And might as well die here.

This was for an assignment at school where we had to write a piece regarding war. I thought immediately of a little girl waiting for her mother to return in a war zone. It's depressing, but I was fairly proud with the result.
