Growing up
We used to sing about sunshine
On a cloudy day.
Our one and only sunshine,
Pleaded for it to stay.
Now we speak of raindrops
Washing makeup away
Falling from our sleepy eyes,
Hoping the pain will go away.
We used to listen to the wind
Whistling and howling along.
We chased the leaves being blown away
Until all our breath was gone.
Now we sit in silence
And leave speaking to those who have time.
We move quicker than wind can blow
As long as we stay between the double yellow lines.
We used to be warm and vibrant
Now we are cold and reserved.
We measure our emotions like a recipe
Hoping our delicate schedules will be preserved.
We used to be so many things
So many paths for us to take.
What happened to the simple way?
Growing up was my first mistake.
