We Can Be Free
Verse 1:
Looking all around me,
I see barbed wire at my feet
My arms are tied in shackled
and I'm struggling to breath
I've been flipping through the history books
and seen the past mistakes
But looking at who we are
I just think we should try and change
Pre-chorus:
Cause we are going down the road of past mistakes
And lookin' at everything we've said and done
Chorus:
We should be free
To be who we are
To restrictions or boundaries in sight
We should be free
Not locked up or turned away
Because our boat is sinking
I'm trapped in an endless cycle,
forced to work to pay off debt,
and I know I've heard worse but still,
I know no one is going to be my hero today.
And I don't need someone to save me
Just because they feel pity
But if we work together to make a change
Pre-chorus:
Cause we are going down the road of past mistakes
And looking at everything we've said and done
Chorus:
We should be free
To be who we are
To restrictions or boundaries in sight
We should be free
Not locked up or turned away
Because our boat is sinking
Bridge:
Where is the dove of peace?
Where is the sign of freedom?
I've been slaving away for too long
and I need some prosperity
Chorus:
We should be free
To be who we are
To restrictions or boundaries in sight
We should be free
Not locked up or turned away
Because our boat is sinking
End verse:
Why are we still punishing?
Why are we still hurting others?
This piece was written for Freedom Day on March 16th. I composed and performed this song, and has some harmonies for the choir to join in as well!
