Writing Makes My Heart Glow Red
Writing makes my heart glow red
And makes the fountain blue
I put words in twists and pairs
And share it all with you
Before you asked to be let in
I never would have dared
But once you knocked, my empty halls
Felt lonely, barred, and scared
So in you came
Upon the opening of many doors
‘Cause one would never be enough
To hide these bellowed scores
And with you came a vastness
I was jealous of inside
Because you truthed and loved so openly,
I ran away to hide
But grab the collar of my shirt
When run away I tried
And I’d have turned and looked
And kissed your face while I’d have cried
And cry with me, you might’ve,
But if cry with me, you don’t?
I’ll stay and wait here for your tears
And leave, my dear, I won’t.

This piece tells the story of my "coming out" as a poet to my girlfriend. I didn't share my writing with anyone before she got to see it, and she was (and still is) very supportive. It's nice to have someone cheering me on in my poetic endeavors. Having her approval inspires me to write more and to branch out by submitting my poems (like this!).
