Leave the Light On
The devils grave lies just below
And I pray that they’re not alone
Twenty nine more
Leave their families behind
Twenty nine men
Lived and died
Leave the light on
A coal miner’s prayer
Leave the light on
Hoping God will be there
Leave the light on
A runway to heaven
Leave the light on
A light in the distance
Ninety nine men trapped down below
Seventy eight left to fend for their own
Forty two years later here we are today
Forty two years later it’s still the same
Leave the light on
A coal miner’s prayer
Leave the light on
Hoping God will be there
Leave the light on
A runway to heaven
Leave the light on
A light in the distance
Small town world and a small town life
In those West Virginia hills there stand’s their wives
In the midst of the coal dust they wait for the word
Through the hills and the valleys their cries are heard
Echoes the pain as it bears it along
Memories, a community’s song
Leave the light on
A coal miner’s prayer
Leave the light on
Hoping God will be there
Leave the light on
A runway to heaven
Leave the light on
A hope in the distance

This is a song I wrote in dedication to the coal miners of West Virginia. In 1968 in a little town called Farmington disaster struck. Seventy eight men were killed in a collapse. I have grown up my whole life in that same town. I can only imagine the pain that my ancestors went through during that hard time. Recently in Montcoal, WV a minning accident struck leaving 25 dead and 4 are missing at the moment. The tradgedy that occured caused me to write this song in memory of them.
