Michelangelo's David
The wrath in his left eye,
The fortress of his stone jaw,
Evil will touch his vulnerable left side
And tense his marble maw.
This hero out of stone
Is a historic figure of Israel, but lives near Rome.
His brow is always furrowed;
His eyes are tense and fearful;
But his gaze is never lowered.
Was this psalmist ever cheerful?
The young man wonders if he can
Deliver the Israelites out of the Philistines’ hands.
The David I am watching
Does not return my stare.
Out of the marble he is thawing
And will shake his curly hair.
He is ready to make a swing
With his famous sling.
It was God who brought him victory
Against the mighty Goliath
It was Michelangelo who made him stone memory
Now David is the giant
And the epitome of
Strength, anger, and intensity.
