Beautiful Birds
“Do you remember when we were two beautiful birds,
We would light up the sky when we'd fly,
You were orange and red like the sun when it sets”
I found out about what had happened from my sister
And I watched the sky fall asleep
I watched the sun go to sleep
And only the thoughts in my head
Dared to combat reality.
“You were silver and blue like the moon when it's new”
I thought about you all night,
I stared into the oval glow far away.
Unsure of where you were.
“One day you asked for a different song,
One that I just couldn't sing,
I got the melody sharp and the words all wrong”
To think about life without you-
For you to not be a part of my vocabulary
Or within my grasp.
That-
That possibility bleaches my brain of any thought
And there I am-
Alone-
Without words to say it out loud,
Because if I did
That would make it real.
“To build a nest we pecked feathers from our chests,
Like a book tearing out every page,
We weren't to know that these feathers would grow,
Into a beautiful cage”
You never called,
But we never left your side-
Who knew that a single wave goodbye
To a moving truck could be so
Final?
And now-
You are that Beautiful Bird-
The light in the starless sky.
